Human towers / Castellers

ENGLISH

As a native person from Barcelona, Catalonia, I sometimes am ashamed of how little I used to know, not that long ago, about the castells, those impressive human towers which are now Intanglable Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. I am not an expert now, not even close, but since an amazing trip to Cuba almost 3 years ago where I made really good friends I’ve had the opportunity to have a good close up look to the functions and complications of these human-living monuments.
I was lucky enough to meet a great person who takes part in the castells and she, very patiently, has explained to me how it all actually works to avoid the tower from falling down, and how many people are necessary to sustain them, specially the very difficult ones, like 3 of 9. Did you know they have to practice very hard, at least 2-3 days a week? Yep. And they do it because they love this form of art, they do not take any profit out of it, and use as much free time as they possibly can to improve and improve.
I have witnessed their rehearsals more than once, I have even “helped” sometimes and I can tell you it is amazing. You might have seen it on TV, but, I am telling you, it has nothing to do with experiencing it live, to see some 200 hundred people (at least) united to build the towers will just give you goosebumps. Guaranteed. The more I see them and learn about them, the more I like it. I might even join the Castellers de Sants where my friends takes part, the best group in Barcelona city, so stay tune for updates!
Here you can find some of the pictures from their last performance.

There are many things I love about Barcelona but one of my favorite about living here is it is right by the sea. I love the sea, its smell, its color and the feeling of freedom I get just but looking at the horizon. Let’s be honest, it does not have the best beaches in the world (I will tell you about other beautiful beaches we have nearby another time), but it is perfect for escaping on one of those sticky hot summer days, sunbathing, or (one of my fave things to do lately) playing a volley beach match with family and friends. It is great in winter too, people walking around on a nice sunny Sunday morning before heading to enjoy a much deserved vermut after a hard working week. With the benefits I get from the sea, I sometimes wonder how I managed to live for over four years in London without seeing the sea for months… Anyway, I just feel so happy now living literally across the road from Bogatell beach, it’s great!
You have quite a few beaches to choose from if you are in Barcelona, even if it just look like a looooong one, each part has its own name and its own atmosphere.
Begining from Hotel W: Sant Sebastià, Sant Miquel Barceloneta, Nova Icària, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella, Llevant, Baños Forum. They all have bicing stations within walking distance but if you are here just visiting and do not have the card that entitles you to use these practical bikes, you can use the handy public transport services. Now, it's your turn, what do you love about Barcelona?

The park I cross to go to the beach.
How to get there: hop on to the L4 (yellow) metro line and get off at either Barceloneta or Ciutadella/Vila Olímpica. Catch bus number 10, 14, 17, 19, 20, 39, 40, 41, 45, 57, 59, 64, 92. For more transport information, visit TMB (Metropolitan Transports of Barcelona) website here.

We are almost there! / ¡Casi hemos llegado!
